While on vacation two years ago I had the same problem with a Mercury 60-HP FOURSTROKE [made c.2006]. I took it to a nearby Mercury dealer; they replaced one coil. That fixed the problem immediately. I called Mercury and they replaced the three remaining coils even though my six-year warranty had expired by a month.

If your Mercury dealer is fine with it, then make sure that it's properly defined on the invoice so that if you have problems in the future you can come back to the work he did.
